Satyameva Jayate’ – These famous Sanskrit words meaning ‘Truth alone triumphs’ is the National motto of India. These words were adopted from Mundaka Upanishad, a part of atharva veda on 26th January 1950.
This famous quote is also seen below the national emblem of India and inscribed on one side of all Indian currency. It has also been used by various freedom fighters, political leaders and even TV shows to create an impact of integrity, honesty and truth.
What is ‘Truth’ ?
Truth is not merely telling the facts about what we see, hear or know. It relates to unchanging reality. The whole universe is dependent on Truth. If there is no Truth, there is no Universe. It is of eternal quality. No one can neither change it nor hide it because truth is god.
LOVE for truth has been one among the many noble qualities of great men. From this I remember a great story of swami vivekananda’s childhood.
One day, his teacher was conducting an oral class examination in Geography. The students answered by turn the questions asked by the teacher. It was now the turn of a student sitting on a bench near Swami Vivekanand. The teacher asked the student a difficult question, which he answered with some fear and hesitation. The teacher then shouted that it was wrong. Then swami vivekanand stood up and boldly said that his answer was correct. The whole class was stunned whereas teacher turned his angry eyes on vivekananda and shouted and beaten him even after vivekanand repeatedly saying that his answer was right. Crying in pain vivekanand said the teacher that he was saying the truth and to check his answer please refer the book. After reading the book he said that he was sorry for his behaviour and his answer was correct. Swami vivekanand felt happy that the truth had won the battle.
Scriptures says “Sathyam Naasthi Paro Dharmaha” – there is no dharma or law greater than Truth. “Truth is more powerful than a hydrogen bomb”.
It must be considered as life giving as breath itself. Just as a person with no breath in him becomes useless, life without Truth is useless and becomes a residence for conflict and misery. Believe that there is nothing greater than Truth; nothing more precious, nothing sweeter and nothing more lasting.
